Dear friends and family,
We made it to Thailand! What a month the last week has been! Haha! We woke up in Utah Monday morning at 3:30am and arrived in Thailand Wednesday morning around 1:30am. By the time we got through customs, picked up our luggage, got to our new apartment, and finally crawled into bed, it was 4am when we turned the lights out. Now there is a 14 hour time difference so it wasn't quite as bad as it sounds! But 30 plus hours of travel was exhausting!
We got a little sleep (very little) that morning and then headed down to the office to check things out. We also went out to eat (twice) and visited the local 7-11. If you have ever seen Starbucks in the northwest, that is how the 7-11s are here. There is one on nearly every corner. But there are so many handy meal options from salads to fried rice for a little over a dollar US. Things are really inexpensive here and I don't think either of us will be doing much cooking, which suits me just fine! :)
So far, we have enjoyed getting food from the fruit stands, 7-11, a little spot down the road from us where they serve some delicious Thai Salad and Fried Rice, the street fair where there was too much to choose from, a food court, and a couple of little restaurants.
We braved the Bangkok subway (which was not here 31 years ago when we visited Thailand) and went to the Lotus super store (like a target) to pick up some necessary items - food, hairdryer, etc.
We visited the very huge and modern hospital (about a 20 minute walk from where we live) to get John established with a doctor for post surgery follow ups while we are here in Thailand. We also got another immunization (last of the many travel immunizations we needed to get).
Today, Sunday, we attended two wards. For our friends of other faiths, wards are what we call congregations. We attended the International Ward in the morning. It was amazing to see people from all over the world in one place with a desire to feel closer to their Savior, Jesus Christ.
In the afternoon we attended the Thai speaking ward. John understood about 25% of what was said. and I understood about 2.5 words during the hour. I need to start studying Thai. Time to put my DuoLingo Spanish away. I am
sad that DuoLingo does not have Thai.
We actually cooked this evening - for the first time since we have been here! We made some Spaghetti with hamburger sauce! At least that is what we think it was! :)
Well, we will probably be getting to work tomorrow in the office and finally learning more of our responsibilities!
Take care,
John and Shelly Brady
This is what 33 hours of travel looks like! We are great actors! Haha!
President Kanyaphan picked us up from the airport at 2am even though he had to get up early the next morning for travel to meetings! Bless him for greeting us with a smile and getting us safely to our new apartment!
My absolute favorite. Mango Sticky Rice. I could eat this every day. Also, I have eaten this every day. (JK!)
Who knew you could get a fantastic burger in Thailand? John enjoyed his meal here at
EAT AM ARE!
John has said for years that sugar sweetened cereal is basically candy bars in a bowl with milk.
Turns out he was right! We may or may not have purchased a box of this . . .
We probably won't go back. And that is all I will say about this.
Delicious! The rice was great too! Haha!
Same little restaurant! This was soooo good! I will be going back for more of this! Som Tum with corn!
(Usually Som Tum is made with raw papaya and it was my favorite! Now I have two favorites!)
